Perhaps you took each other or a situation for granted far too many times and are now dealing with the ramifications of that neglect. A competitive atmosphere may have driven one of you to pull a sucker punch. Now with the treachery out in the open, someone has second thoughts about whether they want to set themselves up for more hurt and disappointment. So, is it gonna be your way, my way, or the highway?

If that’s the case, someone may decide to shut down to avoid the lies, the control, or the controversy.
